Over recent times mental health awareness concerns have been raised in every aspect of individual lives. One such arena is workplaceholding a major hand in the individual’s life. Any kind of disturbance in our mental well being affects us from doing our jobs efficiently. The term “Mental health” includes individual’s emotional, psychological, and social well-being and it affects how we think, feel, and act.
At workplace, stigma stands still with discussing our mental health among other employees.No one person wants to be belittled or treated differently due to mental issue. Nor there has been a qualified way set up to address these issues in any organisation due to lack of awareness about mental health.
Since the onset of pandemic, there has been significant rise in degrading mental health of all the citizens especially the employee sector. It has not only affected not just the physical health and emotional health but it is majorly straining our mental health with the fear of losing jobs, more hours of working online and lesser salaries and the constant emotional turmoil.
All these reasons affect one’s job performance and productivity as well as communication with co-workers. Together we can all work towards improving employee mental health everywhere. Workplace organisations have started to take multiple steps to combat mental health. These are as follows
Making health an important priority
It is important for both management and employee to take the health aspect with utmost seriousness. The management need to / help to recognise the signs of emotional /behavioural distress so that they can react in more supportive way. This could be done asking casual questions and telling them to take break from constant work.
Open communication between management and employees
Organisation gives the workers the space and chance to place their voice and also they are and will be heard no matter their position in the organisation. There is open space to discuss issues with the management, with a co-worker, or any personal discomfort that might occur,etc. They should be aware that they can directly go somewhere in a situation of crisis.
Mental health days/week
To arrange mental health seminars (few days or a week) for the organisation. Making mental health training mandatory for the management people so they are more aware about the process along with employees’ viewpoint and will able address their issues better.
Workplace wellness programs
Workplace wellness programs can identify those at risk and help them addressing these issues through treatment like counselling and supports to reduce and manage stress.
